In order to help consumers better understand the sources of their wood products and the measures taken to maintain sustainable practices across the supply chain, the AWC (American Wood Council) has introduced a new online tool. More information about the origins of wood products used in low- and zero-carbon construction will be available owing to the tool. The Softwood Lumber Board and the U.S. Endowment for Forestry & Communities provided funding for the website’s pilot experiment.

The new Wood Sourcing Tool incorporates information that is essential to trace a particular product’s path from the forest to the end user, such as the mill grade stamp or area of the wood product, to tell the sustainability story.

Users can gain a better grasp of the wood products used in buildings around the nation by using this new tool, which also includes regional statistics about wood sourcing and a series of commonly asked questions about sustainable forestry. “As questions around the sustainability of fiber supply continues to grow alongside interest in mass timber in commercial construction, this online Wood Sourcing Tool promises to provide regional, robust data that will provide assurances being sought by the architect, engineering and construction communities,” expressed AWC Vice President of Markets & Sustainability Rachael Jamison.

The ASTM D7612-21 standard, which provides a strong and impartial framework for determining the sources of wood products, serves as the foundation for the sourcing information on the website. The site displays the most recent fiber sourcing data, which is updated annually and supplied by AWC member businesses with U.S. manufacturing facilities. The most recent data available is from 2021.
Three criteria are used to evaluate the sustainability of wood products: Certified, Responsible, and Non-Controversial. Each provides a different level of assurance regarding the methods used at the manufacturing site and in the forests where the wood is grown.

AWC is also hosting a free webinar on “Demonstrating Sustainability Through Standards” on Thursday, April 27. In addition to giving a preview of future developments in this field, this presentation will give construction industry stakeholders a basic overview of how the wood industry uses standardized methods that can be applied by green building codes and rating systems to demonstrate the environmental qualities of wood products.
