Bjelin parent company, Pervanovo Invest AB, is participating in the BIOBUILD project, which aims to deliver thermal solutions for energy-efficient buildings through the use of fully bio-based building materials.
Initiated with a budget of €4.9 million and funded by Horizon Europe, this innovative project seeks to decrease energy demand in buildings by up to 20%. The goal will be accomplished by stabilizing indoor temperatures and storing heat when it is available.
“We’re excited to be involved in a research project at such an early stage,” says Dr. Georg Vetter, Manager of Wood Technology and Sustainability at Pervanovo Invest AB, “especially since this project focuses on energy conservation and environmental sustainability.”
As an industry partner, Pervanovo and Bjelin will produce untreated parquet flooring as a reference point, alongside parquet treated using the BIOBUILD method. This involves treating the wood with an oil that changes phase with the temperature, enabling it to absorb, bind and store energy. The BIOBUILD project will last four years and is coordinated by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).
“The concept of BIOBUILD starts with solid wood and wood fibres which are converted to novel biomaterials with added functionalities,” says the SLU team at the Division of Wood Science and Technology. “Our motto and proud mission is ‘using wood, adding function and value to wood, recycling and reusing wood’.”
Bjelin looks forward to sharing more news as the company continues to grow its business.
Bjelin is part of the Pervanovo company group, a Swedish family-owned enterprise based in Viken, southern Sweden, with advanced production facilities in Croatia. The group employs 2,200 people and has an annual turnover nearing 2 billion SEK. The founders of Bjelin pioneered the world’s first laminate flooring products at Perstorp in the late 1970s, and later, in the 1990s, they introduced the innovative click flooring, which has become the group’s flagship product line. Bjelin’s global sales team is currently promoting their latest sustainable flooring innovation, Hardened Wood, which is a durable and eco-friendly flooring solution created using the patented Woodura® technology by the group’s R&D company, Välinge Innovation AB.
