EcoDomo launches recycled-leather panel as a sustainable Alternative to melamine

EcoDomo LLC has introduced a new recycled-leather surface panel engineered as a drop-in alternative to conventional melamine panels, giving cabinetmakers, millworkers and interior manufacturers a way to incorporate the look and tactile character of leather without changing their existing production workflow. The new panel is designed around what EcoDomo describes as a key requirement for wider adoption: compatibility with the equipment and processes already used by fabricators. According to the company, the recycled-leather panel can run with the same fabrication equipment, adhesives and edgebanding processes commonly used on standard panel lines, eliminating the need for shop retooling.

The product extends EcoDomo’s portfolio of recycled leather surfaces into a panel format aimed specifically at manufacturers looking for an alternative to conventional decorative panels. Available in all 25 EcoDomo standard colours, the surface combines a leather-like appearance and feel with a production approach intended to fit established woodworking workflows.

Designed as a Drop-In Panel Solution

For fabricators, one of the most significant features of the new product is its focus on manufacturing compatibility. Rather than requiring specialised machinery or a new production process, EcoDomo says the panel can be incorporated into existing panel fabrication operations. This approach could make recycled leather more accessible for applications where melamine and other conventional decorative panels are commonly used. The company’s objective is to allow manufacturers to introduce a distinctive leather surface while maintaining familiar cutting, bonding and edge-finishing processes.

EcoDomo CEO Bernice Lord said the universal compatibility of the material was central to its development, with the company seeking to give fabricators a sustainable surface option without requiring changes to their shops. The panel is also designed to work with EcoDomo’s Recycled Leather Veneer (RLV) Color-Matched Edgeband, providing a coordinated finish on exposed edges. The edgeband is available in all 25 standard RLV colours and measures 15/16 inch wide, supplied in 300-linear-foot rolls.

Recycled Leather Meets Panel Manufacturing

The new panel builds on EcoDomo’s wider recycled-leather technology. The company says its core material is made using vegetable-tanned leather remnants that are pulverised and combined with small amounts of tree bark and natural latex. A resin topcoat is then used to provide resistance to wear and tear.

EcoDomo has been developing recycled leather surfaces since 2005, positioning the material as a way to repurpose leather-industry byproducts while creating durable surfaces for interior applications. Its existing recycled leather veneer products are used across cabinetry, furniture, wall panels, countertops, closets and other architectural applications. The company’s RLV technology is designed for both horizontal and vertical applications and features a proprietary resin topcoat that EcoDomo says provides stain, wear and water resistance.

25 Colours for Interior Applications

The new panel is available across EcoDomo’s 25 standard colours, giving designers and manufacturers flexibility to integrate leather-inspired surfaces into different interior schemes. The company’s colour portfolio includes options across white, brown, black, cream, blue, grey, red and green families, alongside custom-colour capabilities.

Potential applications include cabinetry, doors, drawer fronts, wall panels, furniture components, closets and other interior millwork where designers want a softer and more tactile surface character. The coordinated PVC edgeband further expands the panel’s manufacturing potential. EcoDomo recently introduced the colour-matched edgeband as a durable edge-finishing solution that can run on standard edgebanders without shop retooling. Its proprietary leather imprint is intended to reproduce the visual and tactile character of the recycled leather surface.

Sustainability Without Disrupting Production

As designers and manufacturers increasingly look for materials that combine environmental considerations with commercial performance, EcoDomo is positioning recycled leather as an alternative surface material rather than simply a decorative finish. The company says its recycled leather approach helps divert leather remnants from landfill and reduces demand for new hide leather. EcoDomo also describes sustainability as a core part of its product development strategy, alongside performance and design.

The new panel therefore brings together three priorities increasingly relevant to modern woodworking and interior manufacturing: material reuse, distinctive design and production compatibility. For fabricators, the ability to use familiar equipment and processes may be particularly important. Instead of investing in specialised machinery to work with a new surface material, manufacturers can incorporate the recycled-leather panel into established workflows, while designers gain access to a material with a distinctive leather appearance and tactile quality.

With 25 colours, coordinated edge finishing and compatibility with standard panel fabrication processes, EcoDomo’s new recycled-leather surface panel represents the company’s latest effort to bring sustainable luxury and practical manufacturing together for the cabinetry, furniture and architectural interiors markets.
