Jerry Byrd Logging LLC Honored with 2025 FRA Appalachian Region Outstanding Logger Award

 Thursday, July 17, 2025

Jerry Byrd Logging LLC, a fifth-generation family-owned logging business based in Unicoi County, Tennessee, was proudly honored with the 2025 Appalachian Region Outstanding Logger Award by the Forest Resources Association (FRA). The recognition took place during the Appalachian Region/West Virginia Forestry Association Joint meeting on July 11 at the Logger Appreciation Dinner held at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia.

Award Presentation and Family Legacy

The award was presented by Jeff Jenkins, FRA’s Appalachian Region Consultant, who commended Jerry Byrd Logging’s exceptional contributions to the forestry industry. Jenkins highlighted the company’s advanced mechanized logging operations, dedication to safety, commitment to family values, and continuous community support. To commemorate the achievement, Jenkins presented Jerry Byrd and his family with a solid cherry plaque crafted in the shape of a crosscut saw, symbolizing the rich legacy of logging in the Appalachian region. In addition to the plaque, the Byrd family received a check for $500 as part of the award.

During the ceremony, Jerry Byrd accepted the honor on behalf of his family and dedicated team. In his heartfelt speech, Jerry expressed gratitude to his faith in God, the tireless work of his crew, and the unwavering support of his wife, Sarah, and their children, Millie and Russ. These pillars of support, he emphasized, were essential to the continued success of Jerry Byrd Logging LLC.

Commitment to Safety and Innovation in Logging Operations

Jerry Byrd, who took over the family business in 2004 after his father’s tragic logging accident, has since prioritized safety and operational excellence. Under his leadership, Jerry Byrd Logging has embraced mechanized logging methods and implemented robust safety protocols, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and monthly safety meetings for all crew members. The company’s commitment to safety is further reinforced by its partnership with Forestry Mutual, which provides their Workers’ Compensation Insurance and offers valuable tips for reducing risks during logging activities.

Jerry Byrd Logging operates across three states: North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Notably, the company’s operations were instrumental in responding to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which devastated western North Carolina’s Cherokee National Forest. Byrd’s crew is currently salvaging trees in the area, demonstrating the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship and the restoration of local forests.

A Reputation Built on Integrity and Community Leadership

In addition to his work in the logging industry, Jerry Byrd has earned a strong reputation as a community leader. He previously received the Tennessee Forestry Association’s Master Logger of the Year Award in 2024 and has actively served on various local boards, including the water utility district and the Unicoi County Search and Rescue team. Furthermore, Jerry is currently a member of the Forestry Advisory Committee for the Tennessee Farm Bureau, contributing his knowledge to forestry policy and industry improvements.

Outside of logging, Jerry and his wife, Sarah, balance their professional lives with raising their two children, Millie (10) and Russ (7), on their family farm. They are also deeply involved in their local church and the broader community, demonstrating a commitment to not only their business but also their values and relationships.

Why Jerry Byrd Logging Was Nominated for the Award

Jerry Byrd Logging was nominated for the FRA 2025 Appalachian Region Outstanding Logger Award by the Tennessee Forestry Association and Unaka Forest Products, organizations that have long recognized the Byrds’ outstanding contributions to the logging profession. FRA’s Jeff Jenkins described Jerry as “an exceptional logger who embodies the spirit of our industry, through his unwavering dedication to safe, efficient operations, leadership, and commitment to his faith, family, and community.”

“Jerry Byrd exemplifies what it means to be an exceptional logger—not only through his commitment to running a safe and efficient operation but also through his leadership, integrity, and community support,” Jenkins concluded.
