Woodpeckers has expanded its woodworking solutions portfolio with the introduction of the new Router Sled 4896, a system engineered to provide professional-grade slab flattening capabilities for woodworkers handling oversized materials and projects beyond the capacity of conventional planers.

The new system is designed for applications involving live-edge slabs, epoxy resin tables, large glue-ups, and other substantial woodworking projects that require precise surface leveling. By combining rigid construction, adjustable working capacity, and optional dust management features, the Router Sled 4896 aims to deliver consistent flattening performance while maintaining accessibility for a wide range of users.

As demand continues to grow for custom furniture and large-format woodworking projects, slab flattening has become an increasingly important process in both professional and enthusiast workshops. Large slabs often exceed the dimensions of traditional planers. Alternative solutions are required.

The Router Sled 4896 addresses this challenge through a reinforced structural design intended to maintain stability and accuracy throughout the machining process.

At the core of the system are case-hardened steel rails mounted to rigid aluminum spines. These components provide a straight and stable travel path for the router and sled assembly. Stability is maintained throughout the surfacing operation. Consistent results can therefore be achieved across large workpieces.

The sled itself is manufactured from 13-gauge steel. This robust construction contributes to rigidity during operation and helps ensure that the router remains flat during each pass across the workpiece.

Capacity remains one of the defining characteristics of the Router Sled 4896. In its full configuration, the system can process slabs measuring up to 87 inches in length and 36 inches in width when used with a two-inch diameter spoilboard bit.

Workshop space requirements have also been considered. Not every user requires maximum capacity at all times.

Secure workpiece positioning is provided through included low-profile Slab Clamping Dogs. These components are designed to hold material firmly in place without interfering with the router’s travel path.

Workholding is essential. Movement during machining can compromise accuracy. The clamping system helps maintain stability throughout the flattening process.

The Router Sled 4896 was developed by the same Woodpeckers engineering team responsible for the company’s Slab Flattening Mill-PRO system, a solution widely recognized among commercial woodworking users.
