The Woodwork Career Alliance of North America (WCA) has hit a significant milestone, celebrating the issuance of its 10,000th Passport credential. Since the inception of the program in 2011, this achievement reflects the growing interest and commitment to professional woodworking education across North America.

The 10,000th Passport was awarded to a student at Enka High School in Chandler, North Carolina, making this an even more meaningful moment in the WCA’s journey. Enka High is one of six schools within the Buncombe County School District that has implemented the WCA’s Skill Standards to credential student proficiency, empowering the next generation of woodworkers with the tools they need to succeed in the industry.

According to the WCA, the number of Passport credentials issued has more than doubled since 2022, a clear indication of the increasing interest in and need for skilled professionals in the woodworking field. This upward trend is backed by statistics, with the WCA issuing a total of 1,591 credentials in 2025 compared to just 734 in 2022. Notably, the number of Core credentials—recognized as a key milestone between the entry-level Sawblade certificate and the professional Green credential—has also seen an impressive surge, from just 18 awarded in 2022 to 462 in 2025.

Scott Nelson, President of the WCA, expressed his enthusiasm over the growth, stating, “Issuing our 10,000th Passport is more than just a number; it’s a testament to the growing momentum behind professional woodworking education. Our mission has always been to provide a clear, standardized path for the next generation. Seeing the surge in Core credentials proves that students aren’t just starting the journey—they are committing to the craft at a higher level.”

This surge in credentials comes at a time when the WCA’s Assessed Skill Evaluator (ASE) online training platform, launched in 2020 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, has played a crucial role in expanding the program’s reach. The ASE platform enables high school and postsecondary instructors to become certified evaluators, empowering them to administer WCA’s credentialing system within their own classrooms. This flexible online approach has made it easier for schools and instructors to integrate the WCA system into their curricula, ensuring that students are receiving the highest quality woodworking education.

The WCA’s Passport system, which is part of its broader mission to ensure the next generation of woodworkers are properly trained and recognized, continues to be a driving force behind the professional development of students entering the woodworking industry. Through this program, students can progressively build their skills and credentials, from entry-level certificates to advanced professional recognition.

The continued expansion of the WCA Passport system is a clear indication that woodworking is increasingly being recognized as a valuable and viable career choice for young people. With more students gaining access to the necessary skills and certifications, the industry can look forward to a future where skilled professionals are better equipped to meet the demands of the evolving woodworking market.

As the number of credentials continues to climb, it’s clear that the WCA’s impact is being felt far and wide, contributing to the advancement of woodworking as a respected and thriving profession. With the 10,000th Passport now awarded, the WCA is undoubtedly poised for even greater success in the years to come, ensuring that the craft of woodworking remains strong, vibrant, and accessible to all.
