Altendorf has introduced the Hand Guard, an advanced AI- and camera-based safety assistance system designed for sliding table saws, aiming to significantly improve operator protection and reduce workplace accidents in woodworking environments.

The system is engineered to detect hand presence within the monitored work area and initiate a protective response before any contact with the saw blade occurs, marking a proactive shift in machine safety technology.

At the core of the Hand Guard is a dual-camera optical system combined with artificial intelligence, which continuously monitors the cutting zone. The synchronized cameras track movement around the saw blade in real time, enabling the system to recognize different hand shapes and even identify suitable protective gloves. According to the company, the system is compatible with a wide range of materials, including wood, plastics, and aluminum.

When a potentially hazardous situation is detected, the system responds instantly by lowering and decelerating the saw blade in a controlled manner, helping to prevent injury while minimizing mechanical stress.

Altendorf notes that safety systems in sliding table saws traditionally follow different operating principles. While capacitive technologies typically respond only when hands are already close to the blade, optical systems such as the Hand Guard provide a broader monitoring range, enabling earlier intervention and improved operator support.

The latest version of the system introduces several key enhancements aimed at improving usability and industrial reliability. These include an optimized infeed area for smoother handling, and the option to temporarily disable the safety function for clearly defined operational scenarios. A controlled, gentle shutdown process has also been integrated to reduce wear on system components and extend service life.

In addition, an expanded AI database has been developed to reduce unintended activations—an important factor for maintaining efficiency and operator confidence during daily production use. The system also features a clearly defined and visually marked Hand Guarding Zone, highlighted through precise laser identification to improve user awareness and workspace clarity.

With these advancements, Altendorf positions the Hand Guard as a next-generation safety solution that combines artificial intelligence, optical monitoring, and practical usability to enhance safety standards in modern woodworking operations.
