The National Woods Board (NWB) has announced the appointment of Bobby Miller, a dedicated high school woodshop teacher, to its Board of Directors. With over a decade of experience in woodworking education, Miller brings valuable insights and a deep commitment to hands-on learning to the organization’s leadership. His appointment is a step forward in the NWB’s mission to address the growing workforce challenges within the woodworking industry.
Miller, currently a woodshop teacher at Coon Rapids High School in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, has spent the last ten years fostering the next generation of woodworkers. His teaching philosophy centers around project-based learning, where students gain practical skills by building tangible projects. This approach allows students to connect theory with real-world applications, empowering them with the tools they need to succeed in the woodworking profession.
An active member of the Woodwork Career Alliance (WCA), Miller’s dedication to woodworking education has garnered widespread recognition. His focus on experiential learning aims to inspire students to pursue careers in craftsmanship and woodworking, fields that are often overlooked in traditional educational pathways.
“I am truly honored to join the National Woods Board and contribute to an organization that shares my passion for preserving and promoting the art of woodworking,” said Miller. “I look forward to collaborating with other professionals to further enhance woodworking education and ensure that students have access to the skills and opportunities they need to thrive in this field.”
The NWB, a nonprofit organization, has been at the forefront of advancing woodworking education and connecting skilled workers with industry employers. One of the board’s primary initiatives is to create a comprehensive and scalable workforce training solution. By collaborating with educational institutions across North America, the NWB aims to introduce a curriculum that can be implemented in high schools and post-secondary schools, ensuring that students are prepared to meet the growing demand for skilled workers in the woodworking sector.
In partnership with the Woodwork Career Alliance of North America (WCA), the NWB is developing a standardized curriculum that will offer students industry-recognized credentials and a deeper understanding of career opportunities in woodworking. The curriculum will cover essential topics such as safety, tool usage, design, and production, providing a well-rounded foundation for those entering the workforce.
“We are thrilled to welcome Bobby Miller to the National Woods Board,” said John LeTorneau, chairman of the NWB. “Bobby’s extensive experience in the classroom and his unwavering commitment to hands-on, student-driven learning make him a perfect fit for our mission. We are confident that his contributions will play a key role in transforming woodworking education and helping us build a stronger, more sustainable workforce for the future.”
The woodworking industry is facing a significant labor shortage, with many skilled workers retiring and few new professionals entering the field. Through its work with the NWB, Miller aims to tackle this challenge by equipping students with the practical skills they need to succeed in the industry and encouraging them to explore the many career paths that woodworking offers.
Miller’s appointment to the board comes at a time when the need for a modern, unified approach to woodworking education is more critical than ever. As the woodworking sector continues to evolve, it is essential that educational institutions adapt to meet the changing needs of employers and provide students with the skills necessary to excel in an increasingly competitive job market.
The National Woods Board’s efforts align with the broader push to promote career-based education and fill the skills gap in the trades. By fostering a collaborative relationship between educators, students, and employers, the NWB is helping to build a robust pipeline of talent for the woodworking industry.
As part of his role on the Board, Miller will work closely with other industry leaders and educators to refine the curriculum and ensure its continued relevance to both students and employers. His appointment signifies a commitment to expanding access to high-quality woodworking education and ensuring that the industry has a steady supply of skilled workers in the years to come.
With Miller’s appointment, the National Woods Board takes another significant step toward transforming the future of woodworking education in North America, ensuring that the craft continues to thrive for generations to come.
