Bracell-Award 2025

Brazil is the most influential convergence of productive industrial growth and large-scale environmental protection. Bracell, a global leader in soluble pulp production based in Brazil, has been named a winner of the 2025 Amcham Eco Award, granted by Amcham Brasil (the American Chamber of Commerce), for its groundbreaking One-for-One Commitment.

The initiative, which received the award in the “Sustainability Practices in Processes” category, fundamentally reshapes the relationship between the pulp sector and the environment by guaranteeing that every step in production is matched by an equal and permanent commitment to conservation.

Launched in 2022, the One-for-One Commitment is defined by a clear, impactful metric: for every 1 hectare of eucalyptus planted, Bracell commits to supporting the conservation of 1 hectare of native vegetation. This voluntary principle ensures that the company’s continuous growth in its forestry operations automatically drives an expansion of protected areas, keeping production and environmental protection in a perpetual state of balance.

The recognition by the Amcham Eco Award, an honor celebrating corporate sustainability for over 40 years, highlights the commitment’s innovative model of environmental governance. Márcio Nappo, Bracell’s Vice President of Sustainability, emphasized the significance of the achievement:

“Receiving the Eco Award with the One-for-One Commitment is a recognition not only of the program’s innovative nature but also of its ability to generate real and lasting environmental value. The results of this initiative set a new standard for conservation in the sector, proving that productive growth can, in fact, be a powerful ally of Brazil’s biodiversity.”

The tangible impact of the One-for-One Commitment is substantial. In 2024 alone, the initiative positively influenced the conservation of 186,000 hectares of native forests in public conservation areas. This protected area is larger than the entire landmass of the city of São Paulo, spanning critical ecosystems across the states of Bahia, São Paulo, and Mato Grosso do Sul. Key operational regions, including Bauru, Botucatu, Entre Rios, Itanagra, Três Lagoas, and Aquidauana, have benefited directly from the program’s focus.

Bracell is on track to achieve the planned equivalence between its planted and conserved areas by the end of 2025. Crucially, the company has made the commitment a permanent pillar of its strategy, ensuring that protected areas will continue to expand proportionally with any future growth in its forestry base.

The program’s impact extends beyond conservation on Bracell’s private lands. A core strategic component involves dedicated support for the protection and preservation of key ecosystems within public conservation units and state parks.

Through active partnerships with the state governments of São Paulo (Fundação Florestal), Bahia (Secretaria do Meio Ambiente – Sema), and Mato Grosso do Sul (Instituto do Meio Ambiente – Imasul), Bracell leverages private-sector resources to strengthen and expand the work of local environmental agencies.

The conservation efforts are characterized by the application of advanced technology and targeted infrastructure improvements, including:

These actions are spread across approximately 20 Conservation Units and state parks, playing a vital role in safeguarding the rich biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes.

The One-for-One Commitment is a central initiative within the broader Bracell 2030 Agenda, the company’s strategic sustainability roadmap. This agenda sets ambitious public targets that reinforce the company’s role in the global transition to a low-carbon and more environmentally responsible economy.

Key public targets under the Bracell 2030 Agenda include:

  1. Conservation: Achieving the conservation of 230,000 hectares of native vegetation in public conservation areas.
  2. Climate: The removal of 25 million tons of CO₂ from the atmosphere by 2030.

By embedding conservation directly into its production model, Bracell is successfully translating the need for sustainable raw materials—the foundation of soluble pulp production—into a powerful economic driver for ecosystem protection. This model strengthens the company’s market position by aligning with the increasing global demand for ethically sourced and environmentally accountable products, reinforcing its standing as a leader in biodiversity stewardship within the Brazilian pulp and paper sector.

The Amcham Eco Award validation suggests that this innovative approach to environmental governance offers a scalable model for how high-volume industries can achieve productive growth while simultaneously generating positive, measurable, and permanent value for the planet’s biodiversity.
