In a significant step toward improving wildfire response efforts, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) has teamed up with Overland AI to evaluate the use of autonomous ground vehicles in firefighting logistics and suppression. This collaboration, tested at Camp Pendleton, California, demonstrated the potential of these cutting-edge technologies to enhance wildfire operations, providing vital logistical support and augmenting fire suppression efforts.
The demonstration featured two of Overland AI’s ULTRA vehicles, fully autonomous off-road platforms designed for maneuvering through rugged terrain. These vehicles were piloted by Overland AI’s OverDrive autonomy software, a system that allows the vehicles to operate independently, reducing the burden on human crews and increasing efficiency in the field.
During the mission, the ULTRA vehicles delivered critical supplies such as food, water, batteries, and hoses to remote fire lines. By using a variety of modular payloads, the vehicles were able to not only supply essential resources but also provide pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera feeds, offering continuous situational awareness to support firefighting teams. This integration of autonomous logistics and surveillance technology is a game changer for wildfire operations, allowing for more efficient deployment and ensuring that fire crews have the supplies they need when they need them.
One of the standout features of the demonstration was the vehicles’ ability to establish a persistent overwatch by repositioning to elevated ground for future communications relay needs.
