Canada launches task force to transform forest sector for future growth and sustainability

 Tuesday, January 20, 2026

Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)

The forest sector has long been an essential part of Canada’s economy, driving local economies and supporting communities across the country. However, with evolving trade pressures and the growing need for diversification, Canada’s forest industry faces new challenges. In response, the Government of Canada recently announced the creation of the Canadian Forest Sector Transformation Task Force, designed to chart a path forward for the industry’s long-term competitiveness and sustainability.

The Task Force held its first meeting recently and began the process of engaging with key stakeholders across the forest sector, including industry leaders, provinces and territories, Indigenous groups, and labour organizations. A public comment portal will also be launched soon to gather input from Canadians as part of the Task Force’s broad consultation process.

Task Force Focus Areas and Objectives

Over the next 90 days, the Task Force will develop a comprehensive strategy aimed at strengthening Canada’s forest sector for the future. The key focus areas of the Task Force’s work include:

  1. Expanding Modern Construction Methods: Promoting the use of innovative building techniques like mass timber, modular systems, and prefabricated solutions, particularly in the housing sector. This effort will support more sustainable, energy-efficient, and affordable homes.
  2. Supporting Product Diversification: Expanding the use of advanced wood materials and exploring bioproducts that can open new markets and applications for Canadian wood.
  3. Strengthening Market Access: Enhancing the forest industry’s access to both domestic and international markets, ensuring Canadian wood products remain competitive globally.
  4. Improving Productivity Through Innovation: Focusing on digitalization, innovation, and advanced technologies to boost productivity across the sector.
  5. Retooling and Restructuring the Industry: Positioning the industry for long-term success by identifying opportunities for restructuring and modernizing production methods to meet changing market demands.

At the end of the 90-day consultation period, the Task Force will present its final report and recommendations to the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

Task Force Leadership and Membership

The Task Force is co-chaired by Ken Kalesnikoff, Principal and Director at Kalesnikoff Mass Timber, and Frédéric Verreault, Executive Vice-President of Chantiers Chibougamau. Both bring extensive experience in the forest and timber industries. The Task Force’s membership includes a wide range of experts from various sectors, ensuring a broad and inclusive approach to transforming Canada’s forestry sector.

Key members of the Task Force include:

These members will work together to ensure that the Canadian forest sector remains a critical part of the national economy while evolving to meet the demands of a changing global marketplace.

A Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability

The establishment of the Task Force marks a significant step toward modernizing and strengthening the forestry industry, with a clear focus on sustainability and long-term success. The forest sector is an integral part of Canada’s economy, but as challenges such as rising costs, shifting market dynamics, and environmental concerns continue to grow, it is essential for the industry to adapt.

Minister Tim Hodgson emphasized the importance of the Task Force’s work, saying, “Forestry is part of Canada’s DNA. Today’s meeting of the Canadian Forest Sector Transformation Task Force marks a significant step forward in our plan to retool the industry to face our circumstances today and shape the opportunities of tomorrow. I look forward to the insights and recommendations this exceptional group will develop on opportunities to expand the use of innovative wood products, particularly to build affordable homes, diversify markets, and support resilient local economies.”

Adapting to New Challenges in the Forest Industry

The forest sector is experiencing profound changes as it strives to meet modern demands. Trade pressures, including international competition and tariffs, have raised the need for diversification within the industry. To remain globally competitive, the Canadian forest industry must adapt through innovative construction methods like mass timber, the development of new products such as bioproducts, and embracing digital technologies to improve production efficiency.

The shift toward sustainable construction practices, driven by the growing popularity of mass timber, is a critical element in addressing the need for more energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly building methods. By promoting the use of sustainable materials and techniques, the Task Force will help ensure the forest sector’s future competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.

Building a More Resilient Forest Sector

As part of its mandate, the Task Force will also focus on resilience, ensuring that the forest industry can continue to thrive even as environmental and market conditions evolve. Indigenous communities, labour organizations, and industry representatives will all have a voice in shaping the sector’s future. The aim is to create a sustainable framework for growth that is responsive to global trends, while also addressing local economic and social needs.

Canada’s Forest Sector Transformation Task Force represents a significant effort to retool and restructure the country’s forestry industry in response to emerging challenges and opportunities. By focusing on modernization, sustainability, and product diversification, the Task Force will help ensure that Canada’s forest sector remains globally competitive. The next 90 days will be crucial in shaping the future of the sector, and the recommendations made by the Task Force will guide its transformation in the years to come.

The Government of Canada’s commitment to supporting innovation and sustainability within the forest sector ensures that the industry will continue to thrive and contribute to the nation’s economic success for generations to come.
