Canfor Corporation declared its intention to shut down the Estill and Darlington sawmills in South Carolina permanently, with effect from August 2025. Following a protracted period of consistently poor market conditions and significant financial losses, these closures indicate that it is no longer feasible to continue operating these facilities.
“We understand the significant impact this difficult decision will have on our employees,” noted Lee Goodloe, President, Canfor Southern Pine. He further commented, “This outcome is in no way a reflection of the dedication and hard work of our teams. We are committed to supporting our employees through this transition, including providing severance payments and exploring opportunities for redeployment within our other operations where possible.” The closures will impact about 290 workers and lower Canfor’s yearly capacity to produce 350 million board feet of lumber in the United States.
