Sierra Forest Products now offers a large selection of materials for decking solutions, which have significantly enhanced outdoor living spaces. Choosing the ideal decking material depends on many factors, including budget, intended aesthetics, maintenance commitment, and environmental factors. Composite decking, for instance, is a popular choice for many homes since it combines durability and low maintenance. Many of the traditional decking solutions used in the industry have issues with sustainability or ongoing upkeep. These involve:

Softwood Decking: Although beautiful and natural, softwood decking requires ongoing maintenance. Due to their lack of treatment, these products are more likely to decay and degrade in the presence of weather.

Ipe Decking: Ipe became a threatened species if trading is not controlled after being added to CITES Appendix II in November 2024, effectively reducing its availability. The amount of Ipe available has significantly decreased as a result of trade restrictions.

Fiber Cement: Made of cement, sand, silica, and cellulose fiber, Fiber Cement decking is long-lasting and requires little upkeep. It is constructed from non-sustainable organic materials and must be properly erected to prevent the spread of silica dust.

These days, decking projects call for creative, reliable solutions that satisfy the same strict requirements. Sierra is happy to provide a variety of sustainable modified timber products, including Klaaswood Thermally Modified timber, Accoya Wood, and Americana by Bingaman.

Accoya Wood

Accoya is a softwood timber product modified by the non-toxic process of acetylation. This novel technique creates a very durable, robust wood that is extremely resistant to water and rot by continuously changing the cross-section of the wood. Accoya actively promotes a circular, bio-based economy as a truly sustainable building material with a low total lifetime carbon cost and sustainable sourcing.

Color Grey, a product that produces a stunning and durable surface material that doesn’t need upkeep or refinishing, is also available from Accoya. With its exceptional exterior quality and color consistency, the stunning shade of grey provides a luxurious look with no maintenance.

Klaaswood Wood with Thermal Modification

One outstanding decking product that blends sustainability, creativity, and visual appeal is Klaaswood. The unique 2nd Generation Hydrolysis process transforms the raw pine, which is made from domestic pine, by subjecting it to high pressure and heat. A wood product with a Class 1 Durability rating is successfully produced employing this modification approach without the use of hazardous chemical additives. Because Klaaswood Modified Wood eliminates the need for steam to reintroduce moisture, it utilizes less energy and saves production time, ushering in a new era of efficiency and sustainability in thermally modified timber.

Americana Decking

The highly customizable and easily installable Americana Thermally Modified hardwood is ethically and regionally produced in Pennsylvania. This product is made using only heat, steam, and time—a process that completely changes the molecular structure of wood without causing any harm. Water, insects, and degradation are all repelled by AmericanaTM. The durability and visual appeal of outdoor living spaces will be improved by Americana, a locally produced and environmentally friendly decking material made from red oak and Pennsylvania ash.
