Designing with Canadian wood
Design savvy companies are taking advantage of Canadian-grown Douglas-fir and Western Hemlock. They are among the strongest species grown in B.C., offering strength and durability, and flexible design capabilities comparable to common hardwoods. And often more plentiful and cost-effective, B.C. softwoods deliver on affordability and good value for money.
With the versatility of Canadian wood species, sizes and grades, designers can often achieve their desired look, using a Canadian softwood such as Western Hemlock or Douglas-fir, at a price point level lower than what they are currently paying. These species can often be 30 to 35 percent less than a comparable hardwood alternative.
From light to dark, rustic to refined, Canadian wood species Western Hemlock and Dougals-fir both accept a wide range of stains and finishes. Western Hemlock’s fine texture and even density ensure that all grain types—vertical, horizontal, and mixed—take stains and finishes beautifully. Whether aiming for a light natural look or a deep, rich tone, Hemlock provides consistent results.
Douglas-fir’s tighter grain, especially in vertical and mixed patterns, takes stains evenly but requires some preparation to avoid blotching in areas with varying density. Its warm undertones naturally complement clear finishes, enhancing its natural color. Both species respond well to texturing techniques. For rustic or antique looks, wire brushing can enhance the grain patterns, particularly in horizontal and mixed grain boards.
