IWPA (International Wood Products Association ) representatives met with the government and timber sector representatives from Vietnam for a discussion regarding sustainable wood product trading in June 2025.
The June 7 meeting took place at Forest Trends, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., that supports community livelihoods, sustainable management, and forest conservation through market-based solutions. Senior executives from IWPA and the Vietnamese wood products sector looked into ways to further their collaboration and further their common objective of encouraging the sustainable and lawful timber trade. Updates on trade priorities, policy updates, and potential areas of future collaboration were all discussed. In her talk, IWPA CEO Ashley Amidon discussed recent changes in U.S. trade policy and emphasized the significance of ethical sourcing and open supply chains.
The Vietnam Administration of Forestry’s director general, Dr. Tran Quang Bao, emphasized the country’s recent initiatives to support sustainable and lawful trade, such as the signing of a timber agreement with the United States, a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) with the European Union, and the EU’s recent regulation on deforestation free (EUDR). The Vietnamese delegation also highlighted the significance of more American imports and mentioned several MOUs that have been inked to promote American lumber exports to Vietnam.
“This meeting reaffirmed the strong potential for collaboration between U.S. importers and timber sectors around the world,” confirmed Amidon. “Vietnam continues to focus on advancing regulations that promote legal and sustainable timber production and trade. IWPA looks forward to building on this foundation to foster mutually beneficial trade relationships that support forest stewardship, economic growth, and international market access.”
