Mercer Mass Timber and Walmart: A partnership for the future

 Friday, April 4, 2025

A subsidiary of Mercer International Inc. and a vanguard in sustainable timber building materials, Mercer Mass Timber (MMT) is instrumental in the development of Walmart’s new home office in Bentonville, Arkansas, which will be the biggest mass timber corporate campus in the country. Mass timber panel installation started in the spring of 2024 and is now finished. MMT was assigned by Shawmut Design and Construction and Layton Construction to supply glue-laminated timber (Glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT) for two significant campus sections that will open in late 2025 or early 2026.

Zone 1: Office space and parking decks totaling 897,500 square feet are housed in four four-story hybrid mass wood buildings.

Zone 3: Additional offices, including a single five-story structure totaling 332,615 square feet, were constructed with full mass timber frames.

Walmart is reaffirming its dedication to sustainability by integrating mass timber, resulting in a creative, environmentally conscious work environment for employees and their families. In addition to creating work for 58 locals, Mercer Conway, situated in Conway, Arkansas, supplied 21,000 cubic meters of CLT and Glulam. This reaffirms MMT’s dedication to the local economy and construction sector. “This project showcases how mass timber can transform commercial construction,” explains Nick Milestone, SVP at Mercer Mass Timber. “We’re proud to support Walmart’s sustainability vision and demonstrate how local, eco-friendly materials create beautiful, high-performance workplaces.”- he goes on.

Notable advantages of mass timber for construction and the environment include:

• Carbon emissions are 25–40% lower than with conventional materials.

• Quicker installation through prefabricated parts

• Higher fire resistance for increased security

MMT offered design-assist services, such as logistics, feasibility research, and on-site installation help besides material delivery.

“This marks the completion of our first major mass timber contract, but it’s just the beginning,” exclaims Ricardo Brites, director of engineering & VDC at MMT. He continues, “We look forward to leading more projects that showcase mass timber’s potential.”
