Momentive Performance Materials Inc. is developing a new coating technology, SilFORT Super Hardcoat AEX 1000 for plastics applications. SilFORT Super Hardcoat AEX 1000 can increase hardness and improve abrasion resistance when applied on Momentive’s protective coatings (e.g. SilFORT silicone hardcoats) for plastics. This new technology has the potential to expand the use of plastics in applications where higher performance is required. One of the key targets for this technology is the replacement of glass in automotive applications with polymeric glazing, where material weight and design flexibility are highly desired.
When applied to a plastic coating, the SilFORT Super Hardcoat AEX 1000 creates a glass-like surface that can enable the replacement of glass and provide greater design flexibility in automotive and architectural applications. “Momentive is a global leader in coating technology,” said Sandip Tyagi, Vice President of Coatings at Momentive. “Our objective with this development is to provide a significant enhancement to performance while minimizing the process cost for coaters, thereby reducing the barriers to the adoption of polymeric glazing technologies.”
SilFORT Super Hardcoat AEX 1000 offers excellent weathering resistance and can meet AS2 specifications. Additionally, it does not require the application of an additional wet coat layer and, unlike other technologies under development in the industry, the capital investment required to apply SilFORT Super Hardcoat AEX 1000 typically is not extensive. The application process for SilFORT Super Hardcoat AEX 1000 was developed to be compatible with most existing plastic coating lines where Momentive’s coatings are applied.
