Peak North America, in collaboration with MiCROTEC, is set to transform the lumber industry with the installation of the state-of-the-art Two Rivers Lumber sawmill in Alexander City, Alabama. Scheduled for completion in the summer of 2025, this greenfield project represents a significant leap forward in sawmilling technology and efficiency.
MiCROTEC, renowned for its pioneering scanning and optimization technology, will be responsible for outfitting the entire mill. Central to the mill’s operations will be the MiCROTEC CT Log scanner, which will drive the MiCROTEC Connect system. This advanced technology will ensure complete traceability throughout the production process, from the initial log to the final product.
One of the standout features of the new sawmill is the integration of Real Performance Machinery’s (RPM) ProDog end dogger system and ProSaw gang with MiCROTEC’s CT Log. This powerful combination leverages ProDog’s precise rotation and positioning capabilities, enabling the CT Log scanner to function at its full potential. Norvin Laudon, Head of Sales at MiCROTEC, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are thrilled to unleash the full power of CT Log’s optimization capabilities by pairing it with RPM’s end dogger. The ability to optimize and saw each log to its full potential with minimal positioning limitations—and with much higher precision than traditional equipment—makes this collaboration a perfect match. In this case, 1 + 1 truly does equal 3!”
The mill will also be equipped with an array of advanced scanning solutions, including MiCROTEC’s Logeye multi-sensor log scanner, Logeye Stereo 360° imaging system, and Goldeneye Transverse lumber scanners. Together with integrated software and inline components, these technologies will create a fully connected and efficient mill. The MiCROTEC Connect solution, which is based on CT-scanned logs, will ensure that each log can be traced from its virtual representation to the final real-world boards produced. This comprehensive traceability allows individual boards to be tracked back to their original logs at every stage of the production process.
Laudon highlighted the significance of this technological leap: “Simply put, MiCROTEC Connect allows us to track every sawn product through each step of production back to its parent log, providing unprecedented insight into the sawmilling process. The true power of understanding how the value of each piece of lumber changes throughout the process is that it enables the mill to identify exactly where the greatest opportunities for value increases lie.”
This project marks a significant advancement in the log breakdown process, from optimization to secondary processing, all based on the precision of CT-scanned logs. The partnership between Peak North America and MiCROTEC represents a new era of value and resource efficiency for the lumber industry.
Leif Norrgard, CEO of Peak North America, shared his excitement about the collaboration: “We are excited to work with MiCROTEC to deliver what we believe will be the next generation of log breakdown technology, coupled with best-in-industry equipment for all other areas of the mill.”
The Two Rivers Lumber sawmill is poised to set a new industry standard, showcasing the potential of advanced technology to drive both efficiency and sustainability in sawmilling.
