In a move that underscores a commitment to innovation and efficiency in the wood products sector, Stiles Machinery has entered into an equipment supply agreement with Powell Valley Millwork. This partnership involves deploying a System TM finger-jointer production line, an automated Kentwood moulder cell, and two Makor Prime finishing lines across Powell Valley Millwork’s manufacturing sites in eastern Kentucky.

Powell Valley Millwork, an established division of CPMC, operates two wood processing facilities just east of Lexington, Kentucky, leveraging its strategic location to serve over two-thirds of the U.S. population within a one-day drive. Specializing in Poplar and Radiata pine products, the company maintains more than 200 skilled employees and over 320,000 square feet of production and warehouse space dedicated to engineered interior trim solutions.

The System TM finger-jointer line is engineered to optimize the process of joining shorter wood segments into longer, structurally sound components. By automating alignment, pressure application, and glue distribution steps, this finger-jointer system minimizes material waste, accelerates throughput, and ensures consistent joint strength—raising quality standards for millwork products such as moldings, door components, and decorative trims.

Complementing the finger-jointer’s capability, the Kentwood automated moulder cell integrates high-precision routing, shaping, and profile changeover functions. Its programmable tooling configuration allows Powell Valley Millwork to swiftly switch between custom interior trim profiles, meeting diverse architectural specifications while maintaining tight tolerances. This flexibility supports just-in-time production and reduces inventory carrying costs.

The Makor Prime finishing lines, with their advanced sanding, profiling, and coating modules, bring digital process controls and real-time quality inspection to the final stages of production. These finishing systems utilize adaptive brushing and vacuum sanding technologies to deliver flawless surface textures, while integrated spray booths and curing stations yield uniform, high-gloss or matte finishes, depending on client requirements.

Daniel Murphy, Regional Director at Stiles Machinery, highlighted the decision-making process behind this collaboration: “We conducted a detailed needs analysis with the Powell Valley team, identifying key production bottlenecks and quality targets. The combined System TM, Kentwood, and Makor Prime lines offer an end-to-end solution that elevates throughput, product consistency, and overall plant reliability while future-proofing their operations against evolving market demands.”

Automation and digitalization trends in the wood manufacturing industry have accelerated over the past decade, as leading wood processing companies seek to improve productivity, reduce labor-intensive tasks, and meet stringent sustainability goals. By combining advanced CNC technology, automated material handling, and software-driven process monitoring, modern facilities can achieve significant gains in energy efficiency and resource utilization.

In addition to the hardware installations, Stiles Machinery will deploy its proprietary software suite, including production monitoring dashboards and remote diagnostic tools. These digital platforms provide real-time data on machine performance, maintenance schedules, and output optimization metrics. This integrated Industry 4.0 approach enables Powell Valley Millwork to proactively manage equipment uptime and continuously refine process parameters.

Robust market forecasts project continued demand growth in interior wood finishes, driven by rising residential construction, commercial renovation, and hospitality sector expansion. According to industry analysts, U.S. housing starts are expected to increase by 5% annually over the next three years, further fueling the need for high-quality moldings, trims, and custom millwork components.

The facilities’ proximity to major eastern logistics corridors, combined with efficient material flow processes, will enable Powell Valley Millwork to reduce transit times and shipping costs. This strategic location ensures rapid delivery to key markets in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeastern regions, giving company clients a competitive lead-time advantage.

Sustainability remains a core pillar of Powell Valley Millwork’s operations. Both Kentucky plants maintain Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certifications and employ waste reduction initiatives such as in-house chip recycling and biomass energy recovery systems. These practices support lower carbon footprints and align with customers’ increasing preference for eco-friendly building materials.

Workforce development programs, in partnership with local technical colleges and vocational schools, are set to ramp up training for machine operation, CNC programming, and maintenance. Apprenticeship pathways and continuing education workshops aim to build a talent pipeline, equipping staff with the skills necessary to operate and optimize sophisticated equipment lines.

Jimmy Thornberry, CEO of Powell Valley Millwork, expressed enthusiasm about the enhancements: “Partnering with Stiles Machinery allows us to reinforce our core values of long-term growth, sustainability, and exceptional quality. These installations will not only benefit our customers through improved lead times and product performance but will also create new opportunities for our workforce and the surrounding communities.”

Stiles Machinery, headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a proud member of the HOMAG Group, has supplied high-performance woodworking equipment for over 60 years. The company’s nationwide support network includes a 24/7 parts and technical assistance center, accredited training programs, and integrated software solutions that connect machine performance data to enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems for enhanced production management.

The investment in these state-of-the-art lines represents a multi-million-dollar capital commitment aimed at scaling production capacity by an estimated 30% over the next two years. The enhanced throughput will support growing demand in residential, commercial, and institutional construction markets, where high-quality wood-based interior finishes remain in strong demand.

Local economic impact studies predict that this investment will create dozens of high-skill technical positions in eastern Kentucky, including roles in machine operation, maintenance, engineering, and software services. Workforce development initiatives are underway to train current employees and attract new talent, ensuring that the technological upgrades translate into sustainable regional growth.

Installation timelines have been coordinated to minimize production interruptions, with the first System TM finger-jointer line scheduled to become operational in late 2025, followed by the Kentwood moulder cell and Makor Prime finishing lines in early 2026. Training programs offered by Stiles Machinery’s education arm will run concurrently to expedite employee proficiency and maximize return on investment.

This milestone agreement between Stiles Machinery and Powell Valley Millwork exemplifies how targeted capital expenditures and collaborative partnerships can drive continuous improvement in the wood processing industry. As companies face increasing pressure to deliver higher-quality products more efficiently, embracing integrated, turnkey solutions will be essential to sustaining competitiveness and meeting evolving customer expectations.
