Sumitomo Forestry

Sumitomo Forestry Co., a leading timber and construction firm, has completed the acquisition of Teal Jones Louisiana Holdings (TJLH) as of July 1, 2025, in a significant move to highlight Japan’s growing influence in the U.S. timber industry. The acquisition was executed through Sumitomo Forestry’s wholly owned subsidiary, Sumitomo Forestry America, Inc. This milestone marks a strategic step towards establishing Sumitomo Forestry’s first timber industrial complex in the United States. The company’s focus on sustainability and innovative wood product manufacturing is evident in the plans for this new facility, which will include efforts to maximize the value of wood through sustainable methods such as converting wood waste into mass timber.

An agenda for sustainability and growth for the timber industrial complex

The timber industrial complex in Louisiana will play a critical role in Sumitomo Forestry’s strategy to increase its U.S. operations, focusing on the cascading utilization of logs to ensure that no wood goes to waste. This facility is set to produce dimension lumber and other essential materials for the construction of single-family homes, multi-family residential buildings, and other structures. In addition to these products, the complex will explore the production of mass timber, a sustainable building material that offers an eco-friendly alternative to traditional concrete and steel construction. Mass timber is gaining popularity globally as a sustainable alternative, and Sumitomo Forestry’s plans to manufacture this product in Louisiana reflect the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. By leveraging its expertise in wood utilization, the company aims to provide solutions that reduce waste while meeting the growing demand for eco-conscious building materials in the U.S.

Supply chain strengthening with Teal Jones-Plain Dealing sawmill as a key asset

A key element of the acquisition is the Teal Jones-Plain Dealing (TJPD) sawmill facility located in Plain Dealing, Louisiana. This facility is central to the operation, with a production capacity of 300 million board feet of lumber annually. The sawmill processes approximately 1 million cubic meters of logs each year, producing 500,000 cubic meters of dimension lumber and materials that can be used to construct up to 14,000 standard U.S. homes annually. This significant capacity is expected to support Sumitomo Forestry’s expansion plans in the U.S. housing market. The TJPD sawmill, with its efficient production lines and substantial output, will be a cornerstone for Sumitomo Forestry’s operations in Louisiana, ensuring a steady and reliable supply of high-quality timber products for residential construction.

Wood product diversification and bioenergy production

Looking ahead, Sumitomo Forestry plans to diversify its wood product offerings, including the use of residual wood from the production process. This includes wood chips and other manufacturing residues, which could be processed into biomass fuel for power generation, biorefineries, and other sustainable energy initiatives. Such measures align with the company’s broader goal of sustainable practices and circular economy principles in wood product manufacturing. In addition to timber production, the company plans to capitalise on the approximately 40 hectares of undeveloped land on the site. This unused space will be utilized for manufacturing mass timber and expanding the company’s wood product portfolio. The move is in preparation for a future surge in demand for such products, particularly as the construction industry increasingly embraces sustainable and eco-friendly building practices.

Growing American activities and fulfilling demand in the region

The location of the new timber industrial complex in Louisiana is strategically aligned with Sumitomo Forestry’s ongoing expansion in the U.S. housing market. The facility’s sales region includes key areas such as Dallas, Texas, where the demand for timber products has seen substantial growth. This region is also home to numerous Fully Integrated Turn-key Provider (FITP)-operated sites, where the company designs, manufactures, and processes housing panels, trusses, and other building components. By expanding its footprint in the U.S., Sumitomo Forestry is positioning itself to meet the increasing demand for quality wood products in the housing sector. The company plans to grow its number of operational plants from the current 10 facilities to 15 by 2027. This expansion will allow the company to further streamline its operations, increase its market share, and contribute to the sustainability of the U.S. timber and construction industries.

An expanding contribution to sustainable timber production

Sumitomo Forestry’s acquisition of Teal Jones Louisiana Holdings marks a significant step in the company’s expansion into the U.S. timber and construction markets. By focusing on sustainable timber production and utilizing innovative methods like mass timber manufacturing, the company is well-positioned to play a pivotal role in the future of eco-friendly building practices. The new timber industrial complex will not only contribute to the company’s growth but will also support the sustainable development of U.S. infrastructure, offering high-quality materials that align with the increasing demand for green building solutions.

With plans to utilize the land effectively and produce innovative wood products, Sumitomo Forestry is setting a new standard for sustainable practices in the timber industry. This expansion signals a positive shift in the way timber companies operate, emphasizing the importance of sustainability, waste reduction, and eco-conscious development in the face of increasing global demand for green building materials. By embracing these innovations, Sumitomo Forestry is positioning itself as a leader in the evolving global timber industry, further cementing its commitment to a sustainable future in the U.S. market.
