On July 1, 2025, Sumitomo Forestry Co., a leading Japanese timber and construction company, successfully acquired Teal Jones Louisiana Holdings (TJLH) through its fully owned subsidiary, Sumitomo Forestry America, Inc. The company also plans to inaugurate its first timber industrial complex in the U.S., which may include processing wood waste into mass timber.
In addition to producing dimension lumber and other materials for constructing houses and multi-family residential buildings in Louisiana, the complex will explore the manufacturing of mass timber to optimize wood utilization through the cascading use of logs, ensuring zero waste. By leveraging synergies with its existing U.S. operations in residential property development, real estate, and FITP, the company aims to drive further growth in its U.S. business.
“We are also considering processing wood chips and lumber residue generated from the manufacturing process into biomass power generation fuel, biorefineries and other,” the company said. “With the launch of a timber industrial complex in the U.S., we are seeking to maximize the value of wood through the cascading utilization of wood.” company spokesperson added further.
The company announced in April that it planned to acquire Teal Jones to secure a “consistent lumber supply through sawmill operations in the southern United States.” TJLH’s key asset is Teal Jones-Plain Dealing (TJPD), a sawmill facility located in Plain Dealing, Louisiana. The operation has the capacity to produce 300 million board feet of lumber annually.
Spanning approximately 100 hectares of land, the plant in Plain Dealing, Louisiana, operated by TJPD, produces dimension lumber and other materials for residential construction. Annually, the plant processes around 1 million m³ of logs, manufacturing 500,000 m³ of dimension lumber and materials, which is enough to build about 14,000 standard U.S. homes.
The plant is strategically located in an area where Sumitomo Forestry is actively growing its housing operations. Its sales region covers Dallas, a key area in Texas with high demand for wood products. This region is also home to several FITP-operated sites, where housing panels, trusses, and other products are designed, manufactured, and processed. The company plans to expand its U.S. operations, increasing the number of plants from the current 10 to 15 by 2027.
