Tigercat Industries-product launch

Tigercat Industries has announced a significant upgrade to its fixed felling saw lineup with the release of the new 5185B. Branded under the TCi (Tigercat Industries) attachments division, this B-series saw head is specifically engineered to enhance performance, productivity, and efficiency in demanding, large-diameter timber applications worldwide. The enhancements in the 5185B focus on delivering superior cutting power and control, crucial for operators dealing with high-value hardwood and oversized softwood stands.

Cutting capacity redefined

A key update to the 5185B is the increased cutting capacity. Tigercat enlarged the saw box to accommodate a longer 45-inch bar, allowing the head to tackle even larger trees than its predecessor. However, the most game-changing innovation lies in the introduction of the all-new Tigercat 750RP saw unit. This proprietary unit provides a full 240-degree bar feed angle. This extended articulation is a massive leap forward for productivity, as it uniquely enables single-sided back cuts.

In practice, this means the feller buncher carrier can fell large trees with significantly reduced machine movement. Minimizing travel while processing timber results in several measurable benefits for logging contractors:

The 750RP drive system’s potential

The new 750RP unit is an evolution of Tigercat’s established 750 saw, but with a critical mechanical improvement. The new design incorporates a ring-and-pinion hydraulic drive system, replacing the previous external cylinder. This internal drive maintains the reliability of proven service parts while improving the durability and operational smoothness of the cutting function.

Complementing this hardware is a sophisticated, Tigercat-programmed carrier saw control system. This system integrates advanced features that place unprecedented control in the operator’s hands, including:

The result is a system that allows for from-the-seat tuning, providing operators with real-time, on-display feedback and the ability to select specialized saw functions to perfectly tailor the head’s performance to the specific tree species, density, and weather conditions of the application.

Furthermore, the versatility of the 5185B is extended by equipping the top horn with different styles of interchangeable grip plates. This customization allows loggers to adjust the head’s grip to different tree diameters, bark conditions, and seasonal variations, ensuring superior control over high-value logs throughout the year.

By combining increased cutting capacity with a revolutionary, ground-contact-reducing saw unit, the Tigercat TCi 5185B sets a new benchmark for efficiency and environmental consideration in heavy-duty timber harvesting operations.
