Timber Products, a leader in wood product manufacturing, has officially opened its new state-of-the-art hardwood component facility in Munising, Michigan. This new facility, known as Munising Components, is set to revolutionize the way the company produces hardwood components for the cabinetry, flooring, and millwork industries.
The facility, which is located alongside Timber Products’ existing hardwood veneer and lumber plants, represents a significant investment in automation, quality, and customer-centric manufacturing. Munising Components will now produce ready-to-use hardwood components at scale, consolidating production into one central site. This new approach will allow customers to benefit from reduced waste, improved yield, and enhanced product quality.
Partnership with Eagle Machinery & Supply Powers Innovation
The new facility was developed through a strong partnership between Timber Products and Eagle Machinery & Supply, Inc.. Eagle, a company with more than 25 years of experience in industrial woodworking and automation, played a crucial role in supporting the project from its initial concept through to completion.
Jon Johnson, Manager of Timber Products’ Michigan Operations, said, “Eagle has more than 25 years of experience with continuous improvement and development in the industrial woodworking and automation industry. Their willingness to work with us from the raw conceptual phase, and support the project along the way is what made them stand out as the clear partner for the job.”
The advanced systems installed in the Munising facility include:
These systems work together seamlessly, collecting data from all machines to provide comprehensive production and performance reports in real time through a SQL database.
Boosting Efficiency and Sustainability with Cutting-Edge Technology
One of the key features of the new facility is its advanced high-speed automation and robotics, capable of processing 30 boards per minute. The Woodeye scanners used in the facility detect defects that may be missed by the human eye, ensuring the highest level of precision in production.
Jerrod Allen, a Lumber Inspector at Timber Products, commented, “The Woodeye scanners allow for defects to be detected that could go unnoticed by a human.” This technology helps to maintain high production standards while maximizing efficiency.
In addition to technological advancements, the new facility supports sustainability efforts. It processes waste material on-site, using it to generate fuel for the on-site boilers, which power all three of Timber Products’ facilities. This energy-efficient system reduces waste while providing a sustainable energy source for production. It also brings higher-skilled jobs to the lumber industry and benefits the local Michigan community.
Streamlined Production: From Log Sourcing to Ready-to-Use Components
The new Munising facility offers a fully integrated production process. Timber Products handles everything from log sourcing to the final, ready-to-use components, all on one site. This level of integration sets Timber Products apart from competitors, offering customers a significant advantage in production efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
John Erickson, Hardwood Component Sales Manager, explained, “This mill allows our customers to focus on what they do best without dealing with lumber waste or additional processing.”
A Legacy of Quality and Sustainability
Founded in 1918, Timber Products has built a solid reputation for producing a diversified range of wood products. The company is best known for its hardwood plywood and is committed to environmental sustainability. It has always prioritised producing high-quality products while minimizing waste and reducing its environmental footprint. Timber Products operates eight manufacturing facilities, a nationwide logistics division, and a dedicated import division.
The company is a family-owned business with four generations of history, specializing in hardwood plywood, wood panels, and decorative overlays. Timber Products uses no-added formaldehyde (NAF) resins or ultra-low emitting formaldehyde (ULEF) resins to reduce emissions, showcasing its commitment to sustainability. Additionally, the company’s RhinoCoat prefinished panels feature an antimicrobial additive that helps protect the panels from degradation and decay.
Impacting the Local Economy and Industry
The opening of the Munising Components facility has a broader impact on both the hardwood industry and the local Michigan community. The new facility brings higher-skilled jobs to the area, offering opportunities for workers with advanced technical expertise in automation, robotics, and wood processing.
Timber Products continues to lead by example in both technological innovation and environmental responsibility, setting new standards for quality, sustainability, and efficiency in the hardwood industry.
