USDA appoints six new members to the Softwood Lumber Board

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the appointment of six new members to the Softwood Lumber Board. These individuals will serve three-year terms starting on January 1, 2025, and concluding on December 31, 2027.

The newly appointed members are:

Trey Hankins, Ripley, Miss. (U.S. South, flex seat/small company)
Kimberli C. Scott, Allendale, S.C. (U.S. South, flex seat/small company)
Marc Brinkmeyer, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho (U.S. West, large company)
Vaughn Emmerson, Anderson, Calif. (U.S. West, large company)
Susan Yurkovich, Vancouver, BC, Canada (Canada West, large company)
Jerome Pelletier, Saint John, NB, Canada (Canada East, flex seat)

The Softwood Lumber Board, consisting of 14 members, includes 10 domestic manufacturers and four importers. Members are eligible to serve up to two consecutive three-year terms. The board plays a critical role in promoting and advancing the softwood lumber industry through research, market development, and promotional activities.

The board operates under the oversight of the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), which manages 22 industry-funded research and promotion boards. These boards are established through congressional authorization to provide agricultural industries with a framework to pool resources for market expansion and research efforts. AMS oversight ensures fiscal accountability and program integrity.

AMS emphasizes that the boards, councils, and committees under its supervision should reflect the diversity of their respective industries. The appointment process includes an emphasis on diversity in experience, production methods, and marketing strategies, and aims to include representatives from historically underserved communities. Industry outreach efforts focus on ensuring diverse representation in the nomination process, considering the range of knowledge, skills, and perspectives necessary to serve a broad population.
