West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. has published Building Together: People and Partnerships, its 2024 Sustainability Report. Using a range of environmental, social, and governance goals and targets, the report showcases the company’s sustainability performance.

“Since our founding 70 years ago, West Fraser has recognized our responsibility to the environment and society while delivering solid financial performance,” said Sean McLaren, president and CEO, West Fraser.  “This report provides some details about our activities in 2024 and measures the progress we have made toward achieving our goals.”

The report highlights the following significant accomplishments for 2024:

Expanding data insights and safety training: In 2024, West Fraser established new standards for contractual work and introduced new contractor safety procedures throughout the organization. In 2025, the corporation continues to place a high premium on further strengthening the safety program.

Promoting a strategy for carbon reduction: Seventy-five percent of the company’s energy came from renewable sources. At the same time, all mills made progress on their energy reduction road plans, which were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and used scope 1, 2, and 3 emission reduction targets to significantly reduce the company’s carbon footprint by 2030. Reductions are on pace to reach our GHG reduction goals for 2030.

Encouraging sustainable forest management and traceability in wood procurement: West Fraser’s Sustainable Forest and Wood Procurement Policy explains requirements for resource management and responsible sourcing.

Collaborating with native countries: The deal with the Lake Babine Nation’s forestry corporation, which acknowledged the Nation’s position as a resource steward and aimed for a long-term fiber supply in the Smithers, British Columbia mill, was a significant turning point. The British Columbian government still needs to approve these agreements, which should happen in 2025.

Investing in communities: Through 800 relationships, the corporation made $4.3 million in community investments. Investments were made with the goal of assisting the company’s operating rural areas, promoting mental health, and supporting youth.
