The Wood Industry Association (WIA) honored Todd Phalen of Black Bros. with its prestigious 2025 Ralph B. Baldwin Award of Excellence.
Awarded at WIA’s Annual Business Meeting, the Ralph B. Baldwin Award of Excellence recognizes individuals who have made significant, lasting contributions to the woodworking industry. Named in honor of Ralph B. Baldwin, a respected industry leader and former WMMA President, the award celebrates outstanding service, leadership, and dedication to the wood machinery and manufacturing sector.
Todd Phalen, Director of Sales at Black Bros. Co. in Mendota, Illinois, has dedicated decades to serving the woodworking industry. A member of the Wood Machinery Manufacturers of America (WMMA) since before joining its Board of Directors in 2018, he has held several pivotal positions, including Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice President. Most recently, Phalen was instrumental in the successful formation of the Wood Industry Association (WIA), spearheading efforts to unify the association and drive greater member engagement.
Nominator Clay Coss, marketing manager at Black Bros. Co., praised Phalen’s leadership style: “Todd is an exceptional communicator and listener, respected for his mentorship, industry insight, and selfless commitment to progress.”
Black Bros. Co. President Matthew Carroll echoed this sentiment, highlighting Phalen’s pivotal role in advancing the industry and energising association leadership.
Phalen is a ten-time participant at the International Woodworking Fair (IWF) and a well-known figure at industry events. Since taking on his role in 2000, his customer-focused leadership has driven Black Bros. Co. to achieve record sales and product innovations. Outside of his professional achievements, Phalen is also an engaged civic leader in his Mendota, Illinois, community.
