Woodchuck, a climate tech startup driven by artificial intelligence that aims to convert wood waste into renewable energy, formally unveiled its flagship biomass processing facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Grand Rapids business executives, state and municipal authorities, and sustainable energy activists joined Governor Gretchen Whitmer in commemorating the opening of the country’s first AI-driven wood waste-to-energy facility.

By integrating forefront machine learning with localized waste diversion, the new plant transforms construction and demolition wood waste into top-notch biomass for energy producers, marking a breakthrough in sustainable energy production. Together with Beckett Industries, Alloy Partners, The Right Place, and NorthStar Clean Energy, a CMS Energy Company, Woodchuck is creating a paradigm that unites economic opportunity with environmental responsibility.

“Woodchuck’s new facility in Grand Rapids will create good-paying, high-skill jobs and build on Michigan’s leadership in AI, advanced manufacturing, and clean energy,” stated Governor Whitmer. “By turning waste into a productive resource, Woodchuck is helping us protect our precious natural resources and build a more cutting-edge, sustainable economy. Let’s keep working together to secure more projects just like Woodchuck in Michigan, so we can lead the future and grow our economy.”

When operating at full capacity, the plant would divert tens of thousands of tons of wood waste annually from landfills, reducing methane emissions from decaying wood, supporting utility decarbonization, and converting it into renewable biomass to power local industries, according to the company. “Construction and demolition sites produce an enormous amount of recoverable wood, yet the majority of it still ends up in landfills,” Todd Thomas explained, CEO of Woodchuck. “This facility changes that. Woodchuck transforms waste into value, reducing costs, reducing landfill usage, and unleashing an abundant energy future!”

Woodchuck’s skills are already proving vital in disaster response and environmental rehabilitation, in addition to serving the building industry. Woodchuck has teamed up with many counties to quickly process fallen trees and wood debris in the wake of the deadly ice storms that ripped across northern Michigan earlier this month. This method transforms what would have been fire piles or landfill refuse into clean biomass energy. In the face of climate-driven weather disasters, the initiative is accelerating community recovery and highlighting the importance of localized circular economy solutions.
Leaders from the energy, manufacturing, and sustainability sectors attended the grand opening together with elected authorities, demonstrating the growing national interest in waste-to-energy solutions that bridge the gap between clean power, recycling, and construction.
