Woodpeckers brings new innovation: OneTime Clamping Tool

 Wednesday, November 29, 2023

Woodpeckers phenolic Clamping Cauls bring a trick that’s been around for thousands of years into the 21st Century. Woodworkers have all seen the trick of using a pair of slightly cambered boards on both sides of a panel glue-up to keep the panel flat. A lot of them have tried it and found the cauls flex too much and don’t put the necessary squeeze on the boards.

According to professionals of Woodpecker, “You also would not be alone if you accidentally glued your cauls to your project. Woodpeckers phenolic Clamping Cauls are different. First, phenolic is stiffer than wood and the camber machined into the cauls is calculated to exert 225 lbs. of force when they’re clamped straight. On top of that, typical woodworking glues won’t adhere to phenolic, so you don’t have to worry about squeeze-out.”

“Once we got these into the shop, we discovered flat panels were just the beginning of the jobs these handy clamping aids can do. They can multiply the efforts of your clamps and put the pressure on points regular clamps just can’t reach.”

What Clamping Cauls can offer?

Precisely Machined Camber Applies up to 225 lbs. of Clamping Pressure

Woodpeckers Clamping Cauls feature a precise camber engineered to provide 225 lbs. of pressure uniformly when the camber is straightened between two clamps at the ends. No matter how carefully you prepare your stock for a panel glue-up, there’s bound to be a little mismatch between the board faces. A few pairs of Clamping Cauls across the faces will save you hours of planning or sanding, keep your panel flat and keep it at the desired dimension.

When your project reaches that point when you discover you don’t have enough clamps, Woodpeckers Clamping Cauls can save the day again. A pair of Clamping Cauls and two bar clamps can replace 4 to 8 bar clamps. Just run the Cauls along the outside of your assembly with clamps at each end. The camber takes the place of all the clamps you would normally put in the middle of the panel.

Woodpeckers Clamping Cauls are machined from 3/4″-thick phenolic – the same indestructible material we use for our premium router tables. They won’t warp, twist or crack due to age, use or weather fluctuations. Since common wood glues don’t adhere well to phenolic, you won’t have to worry about gluing these cauls to your project. Stocking your shop with Woodpeckers Clamping Cauls multiplies the capacity of the clamps you already own and eliminates the stress usually associated with a complicated glue-up. They’re sold in pairs in 24″, 36″, and 48″ lengths, or a complete set, which includes a pair of all three sizes.

Like all Woodpeckers OneTIME Tools the Clamping Cauls are only built to order, precisely machined and carefully inspected in Woodpecker’s Strongsville, Ohio, facility.
