Woodpeckers introduces Ultra-Shear Clearing & Pattern Bits

Woodpeckers recently introduced the new Ultra-Shear Clearing & Pattern Bits that work in any router that has an 8mm collet. The company has also designed them with the Shaper Origin in mind. Clearing out large areas for inlays is tedious with normal 1/4″ bits. One can get the job done faster and have a more uniform bottom finish with something larger. Woodpeckers makes the Clearing & Pattern Bit in two sizes, 16mm and 12mm. Both are 8mm shank and both include an easily removed pattern bearing. The bearing transforms the bits into pattern bits that can extend the depth of pockets, grooves and rabbets when mounted in hand-held routers.

The 16mm Clearing & Pattern Bit pairs well with the Shaper Origin spindle. It’s big enough to get the job done but doesn’t tax the motor unnecessarily. If one’s pocketing work is samller then the 12mm version prevents one from changing the tool in the middle of a process.

Woodpeckers has added the pattern bearing to increase the versatility of the bits. Dado clean-out is a perfect example of a job these bits perform flawlessly. Ride the bearing along the sidewall of a dado while cutting a perfect flat bottom and square corner.

Ultra-Shear borrowed a technique from metal-working tool companies to build bottom clearing bits unlike anything else on the market. Solid carbide bits with cutting diameters greater than the shank involve grinding away immense amounts of carbide which is both time consuming and wasteful. Carbide tipped bits lack the shear-cutting efficiency of spiral geometry. Ultra-Shear brazes a solid carbide head onto an economical steel shank, then turns the entire assembly as one unit, delivering the perfect concentricity and superior cutting geometry found in solid carbide spirals. This hybrid approach opens up a world of opportunities for unique, high-performance designs while keeping prices competitive.

The 16mm bit has a cut length of 16mm (.630″). The 12mm bit has a cut length of 10mm (.394″). Like all Woodpeckers products, Ultra-Shear Clearing & Pattern Bits are made right here in our Strongsville, Ohio, facility (just south of Cleveland) and sold directly to the woodworker.
